Give us this day our daily bread…(Matthew 6:11)

Memorizing the mind of God can be a daunting task. We often think that attempts to memorize scripture is saving up for a future day in our lives; however, Bible memory contributes powerfully in shaping our minds in the present moment of where we are. I don’t know about you, but I need the Word of God to renew my mind today! I need to be able to discern God’s will today! I thought this passage in the book was really great by David Mathis:

“Good theology forms our minds in a general way to think God’s thoughts after him. But memorized Scripture molds our minds, with as much specificity as is humanly possible, to mimic the folds and creases in the mind of God. Theology gets us to the ballpark; memorized Scripture, into the clubhouse.”

There are two effects of memorizing scripture mentioned in the text of Philippians:

  • UNITY – Philippians 1:27-2:2 Having the mind of Christ will make us catalysts for a community with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. There is nothing like a commanded blessing from the Lord wherever there is unity and togetherness.
  • HUMILITY – Philippians 2:3-4 Humility is simply taking the focus off of ourselves and esteeming and looking out for the interests of others. When we mold our mind around the mind of Christ, there is nothing like it that can bring us to a place of surrender and submission.

The three greatest characteristics of every Christian are “humility, humility, and humility.” ~ St. Augustine
