Day 8 Habits of Grace is learning about Biblical application. James 1:22-25 says that we should be more than just hearers of the Word, but doers of the Word. So what is Biblical application and how does it happen?
I love lists. I love sticky notes. I love writing in planners and I absolutely love the different color note cards to organize my thoughts. I must say, office supplies is one thing that gives me joy in life. Many of us are probably the same way (except the office supplies reference) but we love making lists and crossing them off on our way. Well, Biblical application is not another way to fill up a to-do list. It’s not about being a better list – keeper but about becoming…It is wisdom to discern His will as we encounter life’s many choices. (David Mathis) John Piper said it like this:
“A godly life is lived out of an astonished heart – a heart that is astonished at grace. We go to the Bible to be astonished, to be amazed, to be amazed at God and Christ and the cross and grace and the gospel. Become a kind of person, don’t amass a long list.”
Here are a few scriptural references to guide us toward bringing the Bible home to our heart:
- Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.
- Philippians 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ.
- Colossians 1: 9-10 that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
