Williams sisters

If you tuned in last night to this historical match in the U.S. Open, you were probably like me, glued to the remarkable athleticism and achievements of the Williams sisters. I love this picture because it captures everything about them…sisters before anything, best friends, competitors in the spotlight, and winners in their craft. They have made each other better and it was amazing to watch Venus reach out and embrace Serena to celebrate another victory in her journey to a Grand Slam year.

It’s in our nature as human beings to be drawn to winners. It’s in us to want to be like champions or at least emulate them in some kind of way. Remember the saying, “I want to be like Mike?” Even if you didn’t play basketball you still wanted to stick your tongue out like Michael Jordan and shoot fade aways in your front yard. Or maybe you were the one who chanted Muhammad Ali’s “The Champ is here!”

We are drawn to follow champions and winners because we were created to follow the champ of all time…Jesus Christ.

This begs me to ask two simple questions that will help us in our journey to living victoriously.

  1. Who are you drawn to?

No matter what season of life you are in, you will experience challenges and adversity of some kind. There will be times that your life will be shaken to the core and you even begin to question everything. This is a time to draw closer to God. The Word of God says to draw close to God and He will draw close to you (James 4:8). The key to being victorious over all of life’s challenges is simply looking to the One who already conquered them all. Let me give you a quick recap of His record: UNDEFEATED and still on the throne. John 16:33 states, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” He will Reveal the winner in us every time and show us how we can be more than conquerors through Him if we simply draw close.

2. Who’s drawn to you?

The Williams sisters have achieved their success because they are each others best competitors. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” We all need people in our lives, whether it’s in our careers, friendships, marriages, or family that will help sharpen our blades to help fulfill purpose and dreams. So ask yourself, who’s sitting at your destiny table? Who can you chop up lofty things with and become better? Who’s sitting at your dinner table? Are you eating victory or defeat? I think you get the picture. Ultimately, we become like who we run with. Winners make others into winners and leaders run further when they run together. Be encouraged to run with champions because you are one. Be blessed! Be revealed!
